Worlds Oldest Football Ground

There will be many people that don’t know that the oldest football ground that has been in continuous use and still being played on today – is in fact on our doorstep! In the tiny village of Chapeltown to be precise!

The ground on Tower Street opposite the Chetham Arms was the original home of Turton FC although since 1952, it has been home to Old Boltonians AFC, a respected amateur team connected to the Bolton School. Old Bolts, as they are known were one of the first teams to be restructured after the Second World War and moved to Tower Street when Turton moved to Thomasson Fold in Edgworth. Old Bolts eventually purchased the land when it was put up for sale in 1970 and have since developed a new clubhouse at the site.

There are 2 pitches laid side by side, the pitch closest to the Chetham Arms being used for First team matches. Both pitches afford splendid views of the neighbouring West Pennine Moors.
